Dear friends of Dr. John W. Spellman,
As you know, as well as being a wonderful collector of incredible friends, my dad also collected many things. He so enjoyed Wismer's Auction house and could not pass a yard sale without stopping in to see what treasure he might find. This Sunday, Oct. 17 from 9 am-3 pm, a friend will be holding a sale of his remaining items (everything from electrical cords to tools to flower pots) in his greenhouse at his farm located at RR2 #5873, Concession 5S in Amherstburg. Please stop by if you'd like to see "fall at the farm" and maybe pick up a treasure or two to remember him by. All the best, Suzanne Bharati

John left us with so many wonderful memories. For years he volunteered his time to present classes at UNI~COM: Lifelong Learning, enlightening the participants, many of whom became followers who could hardly wait until the next semester. The final sessions always took place at an Asian restaurant. He often had personal things to share with us and even took us on special excursion to a temple in Michigan. We'll miss John but we'll never forget him.

Thank you so much George for your memory! Our dad loved teaching these classes, well into his 80's and so appreciated that so many people would repeat the class. The culmination was the party at some of his favorite restaurants. Thank you for giving him the opportunity to continue to teach and tell his stories. It meant the world to him! Probably the most amazing prof I had at university. He had an amazing life. If Basham was still alive he would be at the service. I bought many books just on John's say so. I was in my late 40s at university and majoring in Asian studies so he was a mentor too. My condolences to his family

Thank you John. Would that be amazing if professor Basham could be here. He was such a mentor to our dad and so many others. He would call him "Dear Boy," which Dad just loved. Thank you for pursuing a major in Asian Studies and reading his book suggestions. All the best, Dr. John Spellman's family

I had the good fortune to connect with Dr. Spellman in time to impact the Big Creek case. He truly 'got it' in a manner that few professionals would and his influence made a huge difference in the outcome and resolution. Yes, he rattled a few lawyers and local politicians yet the stakeholders and land stewards among us certainly applauded his resolve.
His humour and wit will also be long remembered, and hopefully future generations who continue to appreciate the Big Creek watershed.

I was shocked to read of Dr. Spellman's passing. What an incredible loss. Like many I first met Dr. Spellman during the Marshfield case. As a volunteer one late night or early morning. I arrived at the farm to help number hundreds of pages with Penelope. The first question he asked me, "what year were you born?" 1970! Oh! A dog, she's OK!! He felt he could trust a dog on his team. I love the photo of John & Sheba you posted. (He & Penelope are dogs also) Over the years my whole family became friends with Dr. Spellman. John and I had a partnership. I would recue bees and John would provide them with a safe place to live. Upon arrival of his first hive, John became an overnight graduate of bee keepers for dummies'. He enjoyed the bees enough to enroll in SEMBA and travel to the bee yard in Michigan to learn all he could at Toll College. On occasion I was lucky enough to join him. The teacher in him shared his new knowledge with local beekeepers. We introduced SEMBA to some hobby beekeepers here in Essex County by hosting bee keeping workshops in Harrow. Our conversations always included what was happening on the farm. (his and mine) our families. As Penelope texted (Dr. Spellman. "He really was a remarkable teacher. I give him an A+ with a few points off for behaviour. Even people who didn't want to be his students learned a lot lol!") He was surrounded by B+ friends who respected him for sooo many reasons. My deepest sympathies to John Jr, Suzanne & Daryl and Brian. He was proud of all your accomplishments, John Jr. your ability to fix his technical issues from a far and Suzanne your compassion towards him, your patients and staff. He loved nothing more than being a Grumpa. He was tickled pink you studied at McGill and found a love for Canada. Dr. Spellman was a man like no other. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. RIP dear friend read ALL those books you saved. Suzanne, sorry we never met, if you need any help please reach out.

Dear Penny, thank you for the memories of the bees! He loved learning about the bees, "recovery missions" to rescue bees near and far, watching bees, building hives, and spinning and bottling the honey they made. I will post a photo that Gerry sent. He loved "smoking out the bees, and wearing the Bee keeper suit and hood! Thank you for being such a great friend!

Very sorry to hear of Dr. Spellman's passing. His death, as was his life, is very significant, as he accomplished so much as a scholar and more. Dr. Spellman gave me my first job, as a researcher, after returning home to Amherstburg in 1990. May he RIP. Ron Stang

I will never forget John, and will miss his vast knowledge of environmental issues. I served as his recording secretary when he headed up the A.C.E. (Amherstburg Committee for the Environment). Years later he also became a generous donor to the Amherstburg Society of St. Vincent de Paul of which I am a volunteer member.
He fought the good fight, may John Rest In Peace.

Thank you Dan. He was a fierce advocate for preserving the natural wetlands, trees and birds of the area. He so loved the St. Vincent de Paul! It was his favorite shop- and he loved throwing a holiday party for all the volunteers. Thank you for your service. Family of John W. Spellman

Sending heartfelt condolences to Suzanne, John and family. I had the pleasure of cleaning for Dr Spellman for many years and he treated my family and I with kindness and love. I always looked forward to his calls starting with "Hello Sweetheart"! I learned a great deal from Dr Spellman- most of all about kindness and respect for all. I often find myself wondering "What would Dr Spellman do and expect". He will be missed. Shelley Toth (Cole)
