Dear Erik, Mark, Elly and family, our thoughts and condolences on the passing of your dad. While we were good neighbours and also knew him though the Development Commission, my personal relationship goes back even further. He proved to be a sage guidance counsellor at a pivotal time in my life, spawning a passion for engineering and I am forever indebted. When he was out walking or if I was on the tractor we'd have practical discussions about trees, plants, alternative energy -(long before it became mainstream), drainage - all common interests.
Matt was a memorable character, gone and not forgotten.

Matt was our dad's best friend since they met as teenagers. He was best man at our parent's wedding and has been in our lives since then. Matt was always there for our parents. Sorry to hear of Matt's passing. We met when I recruited him to the Development Commission. He was a capable and enthusiastic industrial developer and attracted several companies from Europe to Windsor and Essex county. Dianne and I remember visiting at your eco-friendly home designed and built by Matt on the shores of Lake Erie. He was an environmentalist before his time. In later years, we would meet from time to time on Erie Street when he was visiting Windsor.

My Dear Brother Mathias,
Our history together started way back, over eighty years ago, in Yugoslavia, where we were born. My dear beloved brother, Mathias, my only sibling.
When we were young, I was the older brother, looking out for you, my little brother who always tagged along behind me.
We have always loved each other loyally, with all our hearts, and held each other in high regard; our actions showed what our hearts felt and knew.
Though we lived miles apart, we spent many wonderful times together, playing golf, always staying in touch by phone, and even traveling together. There’s just something about a brotherly bond, isn’t there!
As I became weaker with my condition of dementia, you faithfully continued to call me on the phone or FaceTime. I always enjoyed our conversations. You made our conversations so enjoyable, always starting each conversation with a joke just to get me to laugh. You wanted me to be happy. And, you never failed to initiate conversing in our Schwab ish old country dialect. We would always end the conversation, each of us saying, “I love you Brother”.
A few weeks ago, you called to tell me the news of your illness and prognosis. You started the conversation by telling me a joke. Your love, as usual, was consistent, strong, and reliable right to the end. You wanted to say one final goodbye in the most gentle and kind way. I cried and you reassured me that you love me and that you’ll be okay. You told me that you’ll love me forever. I told you that I’ll love you forever.
Now my brother, I’m still the older brother but now you are looking out for me, looking down from above. You are looking for me as I now tag along behind you.
I love you my brother, forever.
