Obituary of Anibal Mendes

August 1, 1933-November 4, 2009. It is with great sadness to say we have lost our beloved Anibal after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Ilda, Dear father of Cindy and Tony Avelar, Molly Mendes, Carlos Teves and his beloved Sophia. Dearest grandfather of Cynthia Avelar, Michael and Jennifer Avelar, Nick, Ryan and Karly Teves, Harrow. Much loved by his only great grandson Channing Avelar. Predeceased by his parents and two brothers in Portugal. Dear brother of Manuel and Sao Mendes. Brother-in-law of Julia Mendes, Portugal, Maria and Tony Vieira, Natividade and Antonio Carreira, Harrow. Dear uncle of Manuel Jr., (Vitoria), Irene (Rick), Jose Augusto (Maria), Tony (Marla), Ralph, Liz (Bart), Harrow, Nuno Vitor and Paulo, Portugal. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Beloved godfather of Bobby Pereira, Cynthia Avelar, Alex Mendes, Michael Avelar and Channing Avelar. Anibal founded Mendes Flowers in 1980. Along the way Anibal made many friends, helped everyone and could fix anything. He was a special friend of Fred Pook and Rossi Baylis and several other dear friends. Anibal was a member of N.F.U., O.F.A., Essex County Chapter of New Voices and the Camoes Portuguese Club, Harrow. Resting at Gerald A. Smith Funeral Home 197 King St. W. Harrow. Visitation Thursday 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Family and friends will meet on Saturday November 7, 2009 at St. Anthony of Padua Church at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m with Rev. Fr. Rick Janisse officiating. Interment at Colchester Memorial Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made by cheque to the Essex County Chapter of New Voices c/o 2529 Windermere Rd. Windsor N8W 2T5.
