To Lisa, Rodney Jr. and the Mulder family I extend my deepest sympathy.
I knew Rodney when we were teens in Cadets and played soldier.
And when we were young men in the Reserves and soldiered together .
He always walked a little faster and farther with a casual gait that would turn a route march into a stroll.
He would carry more not because he was ordered, but because he could.
And his easy smile and hearty laugh that would ease your burden will be sorely missed.

Greatness comes in varied forms. Recently, it took the shape of a modest, unassuming furnace repairman two doors down from my Mom’s house on Bruce Ave. Simply by being himself, Rodney spread much good throughout the world and transformed the lives of many who were fortunate enough to know him or even just hang out with him for a bit, like me. He would feed you if you were hungry (and teach you how to fish too!), give you the shirt off his back if you were cold, and make you laugh if you were sad.
Barely two months ago, I was in town and noticed that some repairs were needed at Mom’s house. Having no tools, I called the man to borrow a power drill and asked if he could recommend a tradesman to rebuild a gate out back. Next thing I know he shows up, drill and fasteners in hand, and, after we secured a couple of loose boards on the front stairs, he turns to me and says, “OK, let’s take a look at that fence.” It was a beautiful early December day, clear and sunny, its brilliance matched only by the light shining from Rodney’s eyes. I didn’t know him as well as most, but if there was one quality that stands out among all the others that he possessed, for me it would be his sunny nature. My encounters with him were brief over the years but no matter the state of his health, he was always cheerful and upbeat, hopeful. You just felt good being around him. Anyway, on this wonderful day in early December, he was his usual happy self, “feeling good” he told me, “going back to work in a couple of days, glad to be out here helping you with this fence so I can get some exercise before going back full time.” Needless to say, Rodney did most of the work. He was consulting engineer, designer, and carpenter. With my puny skills, I managed a little demolition, pulled and straightened a few nails, and handed him tools or materials as needed. We took great pleasure in the work and the afternoon passed into history.
He was a remarkable man - kind, generous, strong, soulful - a great and beautiful man. I’ll never forget his toothy grin and the twinkle in his eye on that splendid December afternoon.

Rodney and his wife Lisa are our mother Nancy's longtime neighbours on Bruce Avenue. Have been for many years. But Rodney wasn't just a neighbour. He was a great family friend. A big-hearted man with an infectious laugh, always there when Nancy needed a hand.
One winter night, we called on Rodney to come and fix Nancy's furnace. It must have been 10 o'clock. Nancy had just returned from a trip to see Antoinette and her family in Alberta. When we opened the door to Nancy's home all we heard was an incredibly loud banging sound, emanating from the furnace. We had no idea what to do. Except to call Rodney, of course.
He was over in minutes. He was a magician. Knew exactly what the problem was. Fixed it in 15 minutes flat. Wouldn't take a dime for his trouble. So we bought him a six-pack of beer the next day, which he reluctantly accepted.
A month or so ago, when Marco was visiting his mom Nancy from Seattle, Rodney was there again, tools in hand, helping Marco repair the backyard fence. Again, he did this without expecting or asking for a thing. He did it because he was Rodney. A generous, kind-hearted man who always looked out for others.
If there were more Rodneys in this world, it would be a wonderful, peaceful, loving place.
The old neighbourhood on Bruce Ave won't be the same without Rodney's laughter, his smile, the sound of his husky voice wafting through the air on a summer's night. If there is a heaven, you are surely there now, looking down on the rest of us. God bless you Rodney, you made the world a better place, just by being in it.

I am a Reliance associate of Rodney's and in the short time that I knew him, his impact on customers and my self was nothing short of amazing!
The grace and respect in which he spoke to anyone, left them spell bound with the knowledge and upstanding of any situation he was trying to resolve.
His statue far proceeded the man himself.
The people that Rodney touched through his everyday interactions were changed for ever more and on countless occasions when I spoke to them they said "he was a breath of fresh air" in an industry as challenging as it is.
Thank you Rodney for always being there and taking my phone calls when I need an answer from the simplest to the most difficult questions.
Thank you, for taking care of all the wonderful people that surrounded you and your family.
Your light here will be missed by all who felt it's warmth, but will continue to shine through everyone, who were lucky enough to be in your presence.

A reliable stand-up soldier and friend. Many stories. The photos here are from 1977 where we - an infantry section from the Essex & Kent Scottish - were sent to Germany for four months of training and the REFORGER excercises. (Group photo is in a troop train. Rear row: myself, Charlie Feddes, Marcel Gagnier, Rodney Mulder. Front Row: Terry Conway, Charles Jobagy, Kenny Martin). Many amusing anecdotes during those months, including his being thrown in cells (an officer misunderstood the colloquialism "I f***ed my buddy") as well as pulling me from the path of a knife attack (very quick thinking and decisive action on Rodney's part). Rodney returned to Canada as part of the newly constituted "Advanced Infanty Section". Hopefully he did tell the Germany stories, for they are interesting and speak to a man of good character.
