Toot, Pat, BJ & Cathy,
Please know that I was out of town, and committed to baby-sitting our youngest grand-daughter for the week, when Tokey/ your dad passed.
As I wrestled with my decision not to disrupt the lives of others so that I could return quickly to Harrow, I took Logan for a long, brisk walk, pushing the stroller. She fell asleep, and I ended up at the lake, where I sat on the rocks and said a quiet and personal good-bye to Tokey and all that he has meant to our family. Somehow the calm and gentle lapping of the waves against the solid rocks, and the soft breeze off the lake bringing fresh air to the shore where I sat,
reminded me of him.
I asked God also to look after all of you, as he holds you in the palm of His hands.

The central picture above captures Tokey perfectly! His laughter and smile left the indelible impression of a man who knew the blessings life offered and was well-pleased. There was a lightness to his spirit which made him an absolute joy to be around!
The most memorable element of my years in Harrow was the connection between our two families, of the fun and adventure we had. Thank you to Tokey, Tootie, Pat, B.J. and Cathy!

Wow I love seeing that smiling warm face again even if it has to be in the pictures of this obituary. I liked and loved this man! Every single time I had an exchange with him he left me feeling better for who I was. The laugh, the encouragement, the inquisitive questions about what I was up to at all the many ages he knew me.....this will always stay with me. As a child the experiences of the pool time, baseball, family visits are joyful. He was always a sensitive and kind man and a solid example of what a good man is. We have been thinking and praying extra for Tokey, Tootie, Pat, B.J, and Cathy in particular, for sometime now.

This morning my mother called to say they had just returned from Tokey Ryan’s funeral. I haven’t seen Tokey for many years but I know that the world has lost a special man.
I don’t remember when it was that my parents became friends with Tootie and Tokey, but I know our lives were never the same after that. “The Ryans” brought a kind of magic into our lives. I think we kids were a little bit in love with the whole family. At the heart were the sparkly and irreverent Tootie and the kind and gentle Tokey. And always the dry humour and the warmth and laughter. In my memory Tokey was always smiling or quietly chuckling.
He spoke to me as though I was an adult. He was a true friend to my parents.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are being thrown around the pool by my older, cooler cousins at Toke and Toot's. Although I didn't grow up in Harrow it always felt like home and much of that was because of their warmth and hospitality. They couldn't make it to our wedding last year but that generosity continued, and I was so glad Christine was able to meet Tokey and we could spend some time with him at the reunion this summer. We went back to visit The Dugout and the old family homestead, which seemed a little smaller than my childhood but was so full of love and happy family history. At the centre was Tokey, still making us feel welcomed and important.
I always looked up to the older Ryan kids and I think my dad did the same with Tokey, in whom he saw a kindred spirit. I know he enjoyed spending time with his older brother, especially in recent years, and cherished their time together. I did too.

Dear Ryan Family,
Tokey was the epitome of a great volunteer who was not only compassionate and wise but a generous human being. We enjoyed his company at our Essex Region Goodfellow meetings as he represented the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Harrow. A great man with a great smile. May he rest in peace. Job well done.

I wish to extend our sympathy to "Toodie" and the Ryan family. I cannot remember the specific date when I first met Tokey but we forged a friendship and mutual respect for each other almost immediately. We enjoyed our many golf and visiting opportunities over the years. Please know that many of us Agriculture types here in the Ottawa area will miss our dear Friend. May God be with you all!

While our lovely Uncle is no longer with us, his spirit is always around us. He was a kindhearted, generous person who deeply loved his family - all of whom will miss him terribly.

I always looked forward to visiting Uncle Tokey and Aunt Tootie in Harrow. When I was young, it was all about the toys and the pool and shortbread cookies. I would play in the TV room facing the street while the adults caught up in the kitchen. It was so different from home; I remember cicadas singing in the backyard one summer, watering the lawn (which almost certainly didn’t need watering) just to see what it was like, because we didn’t have a lawn in California.
Just like I associated those things with Canada, I associated Tokey with Canadians. Even today, when my mind reaches for a stock representation of a Canadian, I think of Tokey: kind, generous, hard-working, warm, and patient. (If you ask me to do my best impression of a Canadian accent, what you’ll get is my best Tokey impression.)
As I grew older, visiting Toke and Toot was less about the toys and more about enjoying their company. Tokey was so thoughtful and generous, always having something cooked up for us even if we were visiting after dinner, or sending treats home to me with my mother if I hadn’t come with her. I’m going to miss him, but I’m very glad I got to know him.

Uncle Tokey’s house was was my second home growing up. I loved him for his quiet wisdom, easy laugh, gin & tonic and Tigers baseball passion. A good man through and through, he will be missed. Love you Uncle Toke.

I'll always remember my Uncle Tokey as the most gentle and calming presence. Visiting my Tootie and Tokey was always a highlight of coming to Canada for vacation and I loved sitting at the kitchen table for hours just chatting. I'll continue on the passion for baseball and the dry humor my uncle possessed. I'll miss him very much. Sending Tootie and our family a big hug and kiss from California.

A very kind and patient man. Tokey was my baseball coach and a highly respected mentor. Later in life when he worked with the Harrow Food Bank, he was always so grateful and emotional when we'd deliver donations from c.d. sales. His advice was always quiet and perfect. My last conversation with Tokey took place at Dr. Sanger's office a few weeks ago. It was a great talk and a wonderful final memory. He was definitely a Good Samaritan! -jeff
