One of my fondest memories of Merle began when he was custodian of Harrow United Church. He had a ritual during the annual Christmas carol service of giving female choir members their Christmas kiss, as we lined up at the back of the church, for the processional. Even after he moved to the Anglican Church, and was no longer at the back waiting for us, I still thought of him and his special greeting every time we lined up. That memory became part of my annual Christmas ritual and I shall remember it always.

Many fond memories of my younger days staying over at Uncle Merle's house when I was a pre-teen. Watching Merle and the senior men, collect the plates at the Harrow United Church and the many hours of much appreciated volunteer work for the community. I am sorry that I am in Europe and will not be able to get down to Harrow for the funeral. My thoughts are with the entire family at the loss of a great man-father-husband-grandfather and friend. Be at peace uncle Merle.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Uncle Merle (aka Uncle Yellow Shirt to me). He was a wonderful man - I always came away from time spent with him smiling and happy. I'm thankful that while I was there in July I had the time to meet him (and others) for lunch. I'll keep you and your families in my thoughts and prayers. Much love

He brought a lot of joy to a lot of people (and enjoyed giving some people the gears too). I will miss him for both.
I feel terribly sorry for his children, who knew him so much better and have lost so much more. Mostly, I'm grateful for the meaning and fulfillment that he provided to Harriet over the past decade and a half; I wish they could've had many more decades together.
His generosity should be a model for everyone—may he live forever through those who live by his example.

Merle was a keen member of St Andrew's Church with harriet and we are saddened by his sudden death today. Merle loved to cook at our annual Lenten lunches and made a great salad dressing for some past events. He also loved sharing 'The Peace" at the communion service and I remember that from just 2 weeks ago. My prayers go out to you Harriet and all the family at this sad time. I am glad Merle did not suffer too long and is now at peace. God will welcome him as a faithful servant.
May you be comforted by your own deep faith.
Blessings and love,
Jane
