Tony, myself and our children have so many memories of the delightful Darby family, and are feeling very sad we were unable to attend her Memorial Service last Sat. Ruth and John were close friends of my mother and father, Ena and Sydney Mclean for many years. The friendship brought them to Huntsville, ON. where my dad was developing Harp Lake. They purchased and built their cottage on the Lake and soon became our next door neighbours for many years. We shared so much cottage fun with the Darby family whether it was delightful water activities on the dock, listening to the much loved guitar music played by Rod McColl around the fire pit, lots of great story telling and many cottage meals together over the years. The path between the two cottages was well worn.
Ruth lived a long life, always caring about others and was still knitting beautiful baby hats while her fingers allowed in her later years. They were a generous gracious couple who will always be fondly remembered by the Bright/Day/McLean families.
Our deepest condolences to Liz, Cathy, Charles and their respecitve families.
Fondly,
Tony, Sharon and family.

I was saddened to hear of Ruth's passing. For many years she and John were very good friends of my parents in Harrow, Kathy and I were classmates and friends for many years in school, and Liz went to school with my sister Ellen and they are still great friends today.
It's hard to believe Mrs. D is gone. She was a very bright and strong woman, and I rather thought somehow she would live forever. Although she lived a good, long life, she will still be missed by those who knew her.
The wheel of time sadly moves ever forward...

Don't be worried and upset. Believe in God and believe also in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am. You know the way that leads to the place where I am going. I am the way, the truth and the life, no one goes to the Father except by me. Now that you have known me, you will know my Father also, and from now on you do know him and you have seen him. Our family has some warm and wonderful memories of times we shared with Ruth and John at the cottage in Colchester when we drove east to visit family members. The look of surprise on Ruth's face was fun to see when our almost three year old daughter Joan asked her "Are you weelly our gwate aunt Woof"? I guess she hadn't considered herself in such a place of honour. Your family members will be in our prayers at this heavy time for you. Anne, Peter and Julia

Liz, Douglas, Kathy & Charles,
I have so many fond memories of John and Ruth. They were both wonderful people and especially nice to me.
She lived long and saw many things change. I believed I received a few scolding looks from her upon occasion but probably deserved.
My thoughts are with you.

Charles, we are sad that your mother has died but glad for her as I am sure that the last years may have been difficult. Our sincere condolences to you and all your family. I wish I had been able to visit Ruth; she was often in our minds. One of her last visits to St Andrew's was some time ago but it was good to see her again. She was such a gentle lady and radiated peace and a deep faith.
I am glad to be able to attend her memorial service and to remember her longtime contribution to life at St Andrew's.
Blessings on your family and safe travelling today.

My memories of Ruth date back years before I ever met her and her husband John. These loving and grateful memories were cultivated in my mind and heart by mother Maria Elisa, cousin to John. We, the Cuban side of the Matthew family, which included my mother, brother Roberto, grandmother Guillermina, my aunt Gloria and her two children, Harito and Gloria Maria had arrived from Cuba in Barranquilla, Colombia when John, Ruth and other members of our Canadian family started to pour in their generosity upon us. They sent us money to help establish ourselves and what I remember most vividly was the sewing machine my mother got with their money. This was used by my aunt Gloria to do seamstress work and by my grandmother who sewed aprons for a beer company. That gift was good and practical but what was a greater blessing were the letters they exchanged with my mother who translated them to us, as a captivated audience listening to good news from a radio. These letters of encouragement, letting us know that we weren’t alone in this new strange world gave my mother and us strength and calm during very hard times.
Through the years the correspondence turn into updating each other on life in general, the children’s progress or difficulties, always keeping the family ties tight and loving. Some of these letters were given back to me by Ruth and cousin Louise Foulds when we all met again in the summer of 2000's family reunion. Thanks to our cousin Charles Darby, who orchestrate the marvelous get-together, the members of the greatest generation saw each, some for the first time others for the first time since World War Two. We the Matthews and their descendants will always be indebted to you Charles for getting us together.
We, the Cuban-Matthews, deeply loved and cherished your dear Ruth and rejoice that she is now with those who went before her to be with God, our Lord. With love, Maria Dolores Novoa Matthew

We send along our condolences to the Darby family on the passing of Ruth . The Darbys were among the many fine families we knew growing up in Harrow during a very different era . For several generations people grew up secure in the knowledge that their pharmaceutical needs were in good hands with the services of Darby's Drug Store at their disposal . Located in the very centre of Town they not only dispensed prescriptions they also sold gifts at Christmas and dished up sundaes ,banana splits and other treats at the soda bar . Above all they were a friendly and trusted place where everyone was treated in a special way .Their own cough syrup was the best ! .
I can recall Ruth visiting our home to play bridge with my mother and I also remember her being one of the first to bring food and offer solace when my father died .Time has passed but the memory of such good people remains .

To the Darby Family,
Please remember that your loss is shared by those who care. Ruth was a very special lady and always supportive of her children and grandchildren whom she loved unconditionally. Her calm, serene manner helped anyone in a stressful situation and she could always use her cryptic sense of humour to make us smile. She will be missed by many.
With sincere sympathy,
